A research team including Amazon has released GOFish, a method that builds a full-field-of-view 3DGS and a well-aligned mesh from fisheye images alone. It aims to produce simulation-ready digital twins without LiDAR.
Why it mattersRobots, autonomous vehicles, and 360° cameras often use fisheye lenses. For workflows that build reconstructed real-world environments from captured footage, being able to use the full field of view out to the edges could be an advantage. However, whether it works in real-world settings depends on what code and models are released and on testing with your own data.

LibreYOLO's documentation now includes instructions for running Speridlabs Idol, which generates 3D Gaussian Splats from a single image of an object. Output is .ply and .splat, and the main license for code and weights is Apache-2.0.
Why it matters3DGS is normally reconstructed from many photos. If it can be generated from one, it could widen the entry point for making assets for games and exhibitions. However, this is generation that estimates surfaces that are not visible. It differs in nature from recording uses that measure a real object, so accuracy cannot be assessed from the available material. Because output is available as .plyand .splat, the files can be loaded into existing 3DGS viewers, which should make it easy to handle in practice.

speridlabs has released Idol, a model that generates up to about 1.05 million Gaussians from a single image of an object. Peak VRAM is 7.2GB, and the output is a standard 3DGS PLY.
Why it mattersBecause 3DGS can be made from a single image, possible uses include drafting small props and background assets for games and video production. The output is a standard .ply, so it is said to open in existing 3DGS viewers.
