This article sorts out two open-source add-ons for working with Gaussian Splatting in Blender: SkySplat and 3DGS Render. The former focuses on training from drone video; the latter focuses on editing, rendering and simple lighting.
Why it mattersFor production, this adds options for compositing real-world 3DGS captures in Blender with existing meshes, lights and cameras. SkySplat covers capture through training, while 3DGS Render covers editing and compositing after training. Because their roles differ, they are less competitors than tools for different stages of the pipeline.

Zuoxu Wang and colleagues have posted to arXiv a method that reconstructs a real environment with 3DGS and synthesizes wrist-camera images. They report that, on reaching motions in motherboard disassembly, it achieved a higher success rate than teleoperated demonstrations.
Why it mattersThis is an example of using 3DGS for Real2Sim data generation centered on visual reproduction. It suggests that training data could be created from short captures even in settings with reflective or thin objects that are hard to mesh.

Ziang Guo and colleagues propose SG^2SLAM, a 3DGS SLAM for outdoor monocular navigation. They say it outperformed conventional frame-by-frame correspondence methods on KITTI and the Waymo Open Dataset.
Why it mattersIf a dense map and trajectory can be obtained from a monocular camera alone, the method could be used for outdoor navigation on small mobile platforms and robots that have difficulty carrying LiDAR. However, validation on real hardware is not confirmed in the source material.

A method that controls 3DGS density using a score derived from the reconstruction loss, rather than heuristics, has been released. Code for standard 3DGS is on GitHub, and results on the seven Mip-NeRF360 scenes report higher metrics with fewer Gaussians.
Why it mattersIf quality metrics can be raised while reducing the number of Gaussians, this could help cut file size and rendering load. For practitioners working on web and mobile delivery and viewers, it could be one way to limit counts on the training side.

VAST-AI has released "TripoSplat," a demo on Hugging Face that converts images into Gaussian splats. A post says the output PLY can be opened in SuperSplat, a browser-based editing tool.
Why it mattersBecause the output is PLY or .splat, it may be possible to pass it to existing 3DGS viewers and editing tools. However, actual compatibility is, in the sources, limited to the poster's report of having viewed it.
